The 2012 World Bank Development Report focuses on Gender Equality & Development

Findings include:

  • Nearly 3.9 million women and girls missing globally
  • Gaps between boys & girls in primary education have narrowed in nearly all countries (MDG3)
  • Economically empowering women can decrease domestic abuse in some countries but also increases the likelihood in other countries
  • Large differences in voice of women & men in the households

Key Recommendations:

  • addressing human capital issues, such as excess deaths of girls and women and gender gaps in education where these persist;
  • closing earning and productivity gaps between women and men;
  • giving women greater voice within households and societies; and
  • limiting the perpetuation of gender inequality across generations.
