Current campaign to commemorate the launch of Restored
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread abuses of human rights worldwide. It is not only a major cause of death and disability, but it is also a leading factor in global poverty. It is utterly unacceptable and totally preventable. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General rightly states, 'Violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable.’ Violence against women must stop. The church can be a part of preventing and ending violence against women.
In marking the launch of Restored this Saturday, Restored has teamed up with Tearfund, a founder member, to lobby for the appointment of a Minister on International VAW. The Ministerial brief should cover DFID, the FCO and the MoD to ensure that there is a dedicated resource to lead the UK’s International VAW work & enable the UK to meet its domestic and international obligations on VAWG.
The announcement on International Women’s Day 2009 of the new role was welcomed. However under the new coalition government this post has yet to be appointed.
We want you to email William Hague and ask for the appointment to post be made sooner rather than later. You can do this using the Tearfund Facebook application Superbadger which you can access using this link http://bit.ly/bxKS7s
Let's mark the launch of Restored by taking some positive action.
Thanks
Watch this space for future campaigns
Restored plans to organise campaigns in the future. In 2011 we will launch a campaign aimed at mobilising men to end VAW. Watch out for news of future campaigns, and let us know at info@restoredrelationships.org if you have ideas for a campaign at the local, national or global level.
